First televised in 1980, Children in Need provides grants to projects in the UK which support disadvantaged children, young people and organisations which empower children and extend their life choices. Children in Need’s positive outreach inspired the Aztec Group to get involved in the 2015 appeal and do as much as possible to raise money for this worthy cause.
The day was truly a team effort with everyone pitching in with the more traditional fundraisers such as cake sales, quizzes and raffles as well as the addition of face painting and even leg waxing!
Through colleague nominations, employees in our Jersey office put aside their pride to have their faces painted as various childhood heroes, the theme of this year’s Children in Need appeal. John Gavey, the Group’s Chief Operating Officer, was transformed into an impressive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle for the day and we also had a range of other characters; from Wonder Woman to the Hulk.
Our most popular fundraiser was the donation based nominations for employees to have their legs waxed! Out of the bravest five who had put themselves forward, the unlucky winner who raised the largest total was Tom Wilkinson, a Marketing Manager at the Group. It was all great fun and most importantly the activities raised just under £3,000 for Children in Need!
“We can always count on everybody helping out in one way or another for worthy causes like Children in Need. Aztec Group promised to match the final total raised on the day which gave everyone that bit of extra determination to go the extra mile and support Children in Need by raising funds!” Mark Wanless, Director and Head of Sponsorship and Fundraising.
The fundraising culminated with the Children in Need appeal night, an entire evening of entertainment on BBC One with celebrities singing and dancing amongst other activities to help raise money. This year Jersey hosted a large fundraiser at Fort Regent which was broadcast across the UK and Channel Islands. The evening included a choir of over 200 children as well as the ‘Children in Need Corporate Challenge’ which Aztec Group was delighted to participate in!
The ‘Children in Need Corporate Challenge’ involved 10 teams competing, dressed as heroes on a large obstacle course. Aztec Group formed the ‘Aztec Allsorts Heroes’ and managed to remain undefeated in all obstacles bar one. After a final knock out round of dodgeball the ‘Aztec Allsorts Heroes’ lifted the winning trophy!
